Candidates can line up for school board election

There are just two weeks left to throw your hat in the ring to seek a seat on the Hamtramck Board of Education.
Up for election are two positions on the board. The six-year terms of Board President Jihan Aiyash and Boardmember Salah Hadwan are expiring at the end of this year.
So far, it appears Hadwan won’t be seeking re-election, but it’s not known what Aiyash plans to do.
Candidates must file for office by July 23, and, for those who have second thoughts about running, they then have until July 26 to withdraw from the race.
To file, you will need to submit an affidavit of identity, with two notarized copies, and either pay a $100 filing fee or submit a nominating petition with at least 40 valid signatures of Hamtramck voters (no more than 100 valid signatures).
The election for the Board of Education is not until this November.
Filing forms are available at the Hamtramck City Clerk’s Office in city hall or online at the Michigan Secretary of State website.
In other election news, absentee ballots (commonly referred to as AV ballots) have already been mailed out to those who requested one for the upcoming Aug. 6 Primary Election. You can still request an absentee ballot through the city clerk’s office.
AV ballots can be submitted as late as the day of the primary election.
On the ballot are partisan elections for U.S. senator for this district, U.S. representative for this district, state representative for this district, county prosecutor, county sheriff, county clerk, county treasurer, county register of deeds and county commissioner.
On the Democratic side of the county commissioner race, Hamtramck City Councilmembers Mohammed Alsomiri and Mohammed Hassan are challenging longtime incumbent Martha Scott (D-Highland Park) for county commissioner.
There are also two county ballot proposals.
