At about 3 p.m. on Wednesday (July 16), Hamtramck police said a 3-year-old girl was struck and killed by a school bus on Burger St.
When officers arrived at the scene, the child’s mother was with her, and the child was still breathing, but unresponsive, according to City Manager Max Garbarino.
The child was later pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital in Detroit.
According to Garbarino, the girl ran into the street with her mother in close pursuit. The driver of the bus said he did not see the child, Garbarino said.
No arrests have been made, and the bus driver, a contractor with the Hamtramck Public School District, is cooperating in the investigation.
The Review reached out to school district Interim Superintendent James Larson-Shidler and Board of Education President Jihan Aiyash for comment but neither responded.
It does not appear to be a case of reckless or speeding driving nor were there any signs of alcohol use.
This is the city’s first traffic fatality of the year.
