Breaking News … HPS delays return to school

Students in the Hamtramck Public School District will not be returning to school as planned this Monday (April 5).
In a press release issued by the district on Friday, Superintendent Jaleelah Ahmed said that students in kindergarten through 6th grades will now return to in-classroom learning on April 12.
Ahmed said the decision to push back the return to school by a week was caused by the recent surge of COVID-19 cases in the metro area and the state.
“Today, it was determined that we will need to delay the return to in-person learning in response to the increased travel and influx of COVID-19 variants,” Ahmed said in the press release.
The district is working “closely with the Wayne County Public Health Division to determine next steps,” Ahmed added.
She went on to say, “Grades 7-12 can still expect to return to in-person learning the week of April 19.
“We believe it is important to continue to respond to the changing pandemic, and to always put the safety of our school community first. We remain committed to creating the safest learning environment possible for our children.”
